La Galleria Franco Noero, all’interno dello spazio in residence è lieta di ospitare I Went Away and Forgot You. A While Ago I Remembered.I Remembered I’d Forgotten You. I Was Dreaming., un’installazione e un’opera video di Dana Awartani, la prima realizzata sinora dall’artista. Nella doppia installazione l’artista ricerca il modo per rendere onore alla bellezza dell’architettura e del disegno di tradizione islamica.

 

Awartani ha lavorato con pazienza e meticolosità per diversi giorni nello spazio della galleria, realizzando manualmente un disegno geometrico a pavimento di grandi dimensioni; la sabbia di un bianco immacolato di cui è costituito il pavimento è stata reperita localmente, e precedentemente colorata dall’artista stessa con pigmenti naturali in polvere, estratti da elementi minerali e vegetali, in maniera da tradurre in atto la sua passione per le tecniche artistiche tradizionali. Anche il motivo geometrico del pavimento rimanda alla lavorazione tipica delle mattonelle arabe e islamiche, una volta comuni nella maggior parte delle abitazioni di quei paesi.

 

Il video è stato realizzato dall’artista in precedenza, dopo aver realizzato un lavoro simile sul pavimento di una stanza all’interno di una casa abbandonata nella parte antica di Jeddah, un quartiere in cui tempo fa viveva la generazione dell’età dei suoi nonni. Il video mostra l’artista nell’atto di distruggere l’opera da lei terminata, spazzando letteralmente via le mattonelle di sabbia con una scopa: un gesto che fa eco simbolicamente all’attuale disfacimento dei valori di identità e di patrimonio culturale, conseguenza di un ossessivo e incurante bisogno di una società più moderna e industrializzata, senza la netta consapevolezza di ciò che si lascia indietro. Tramite il suo gesto finale, l’artista intende sottolineare l’importanza di preservare e apprezzare ciò che costituisce un aspetto cruciale ed essenziale riguardo all’identità collettiva della sua regione: non si tratta di un attacco alla modernizzazione quindi, piuttosto la volontà di rimarcare quanto fondamentale sia la necessità di convivenza e co-esistenza tra vecchio e nuovo. Anche il tipo di casa scelta dall’artista per realizzare la sua installazione non è casuale e riveste un ruolo importante, in quanto esempio tipico del modo di vivere dell’élite benestante di Jeddah nel periodo tra la fine degli anni ’50 e nei primi ani ’60; è in questo momento che l’architettura delle case vira dal tradizionale stile Hejazi ad un’estetica europea con l’intenzione di trasmettere il segno di una società più “civilizzata” e “avanzata”, andando però completamente perduta la propria identità culturale.

 

Il simbolismo di Awartani si rivela contestualmente in ciò che giace sul pavimento e nella proiezione a parete, quasi fossero un racconto premonitore, rivelando e mostrando un dualismo fra creazione e distruzione, passato e presente. L’artista vuole risvegliare la nostra coscienza riguardo all’importanza di celebrare e preservare il linguaggio senza tempo dell’estetica geometrica come linguaggio universale di bellezza e armonia.

Current Galleria Franco Noero has decided to make available some areas of Apply its premises, for a period of 6 to 12 months, to independent organisations, artists and not-for-profit spaces on the Italian and international scene. With the aim of bringing about real interaction between contemporary languages and experiments, they are invited to submit a programme that is completely independent from that of the Gallery.
For the first year, from November 2013, the space was made available to Cripta 747, a not-for-profit organisation.
