Anna Boghiguian (b. 1946, Cairo) lives and works in Cairo, Egypt.
Anna Boghiguian uses different expressive languages: drawings, paintings, collages, and installations through which she tells her thoughts and her personal experiences in an intimate and expressive way. Very attentive to social issues, through her art involves the viewer and conveys the direction of the narrative, with which she tells the inconvenience and contradictions of the contemporary human being.
In her work, she denounces oppression, aggression, and extremism in past and present contexts. Boghiguian’s graphic works are anti-aesthetic and dionysiac because they privilege an immediate and emotional form of verbal and visual communication, contrary to an academic style linked to a notion of classical, apollonian beauty.
Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions in international public and private Institutions, including: The Power Plant Contemporary Art, Toronto, Canada (2023); Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz, Austria (2022); Kunsthaus Bregenz in Venedig: Scuola di San Pasquale, Venice, Italy (2022); IVAM - Institut Valencià dʼArt Modern, Valencia, Spain (2021); MGK - Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen, Siegen, Germany (2021); The Stedelijk Museum, Gent, Belgium (2020); Tate, St. Ives, UK (2019); Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah, UAE (2018); New Museum, New York, USA (2017); Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli, Italy (2017); Carré d’Art, Nîmes, France (2016); SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art, Montreal, Canada (2015); Benaki Museum of Greek Culture, Athens, Greece (2010), among others.
