Tom Burr (New Haven, 1963) lives and works in New York and Norfolk.
He attended the Educational Center for the Arts High School, a multi-arts program taught in part by Yale University graduate students. In the late 1990s, Burr embarked upon a body of work that continues today derived from the language of the geometries and materials of minimalist sculpture on the one hand, and exploring the ways in which we imbue the spaces and things by which we are surrounded—like clothing, furniture, or the patterns in wood—with our memories and emotions.
His work has been shown in solo exhibition in international public and private institutions, including: Grazer Kunstverein, Graz, Austria (2025); Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2019); SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, USA (2018); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, USA (2018); Westfalischer Kunstverein, Munster, Germany (2017); Peep-Hole, Milan, Italy (2015); Center for Curatorial Studies and Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College (CCS Bard), Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, USA (2014); FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, France (2011); Sculpture Center, New York, USA (2008); Secession, Vienna, Austria (2007); Institute for Visual Culture, Cambridge, UK (2003); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, USA (2002); Kunstverein Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany (2000).
He has also taken part in many group exhibitions in institution including: Museion, Bolzano, Italy (2024); Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, Monaco (2024); Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany (2020); Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK (2019); Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Gemany (2019); Kunsthalle Bern, Bern, Switzerland (2018); Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham, UK (2018); Museum Angewandtekunst, Frankfurt en Main, Germany (2017); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Austria (2016); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA (2014); Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Miami, USA (2013); Museion, Bolzano, Italy (2012); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain (2010); Saatchi Gallery, London, UK (2009); Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark (2009); De Appel, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2008); Migros Migros Museum Fuer Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, Switzerland (2008); Witte de With, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2007); The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, USA (2004).
